Interview Techniques
Things to Do Before the Interview
- Be knowledgeable about the institution and position you are applying for.
- Determine your reasons for choosing the organisation and position you are applying for.
- Prepare a separate CV and cover letter for each organisation and position you apply for.
- Before going to the interview, find out about the person or persons on the interview panel.
- Ensure you arrive before the interview time. Being late may give the employer the impression that you lack time management skills.
- Opt for formal attire, avoiding overly elaborate choices.
- Try to anticipate the questions you may be asked and prepare accordingly.
- Be mindful of your behaviour and attitude in the interview corridor and waiting room.
- If you cannot attend the interview, find reasons to inform the other party and request an appointment for a later date.
- Plan for the areas you think you are lacking in, prepare, and do not forget to rehearse.
- Reviewing resources on interview techniques, watching videos on the subject, and seeking support from expert career counsellors before the interview will contribute to the process.
What to Do During the Interview
- Analyse the requirements of the job you are applying for and the employer so that you are prepared for the questions you will be asked.
- Plan for any areas you feel you are lacking in, prepare yourself and do not forget to practise.
- Be ready to discuss the challenges and advantages of the position you are applying for.
- Greet the committee members or member during the initial welcome. Then, establish a formal seating arrangement. Maintain a positive and natural smile throughout the process.
- Establish mutual eye contact with the person or persons conducting the interview, but take care that this eye contact is not uncomfortable.
- Use a tone of voice that conveys your interest and attitude towards the position you are applying for.
- Pay attention to questions about yourself and the specific and general goals of the institution you are applying to. These questions help the person or persons conducting the interview notice your suitability for the position you are applying for. They show your interest and care for the institution you are applying to.
- If you have previous work experience, take care not to mention any negative attitudes you had towards your former employer, manager or colleagues during the interview.
- Remember to view your weaknesses as areas for improvement.
- Be honest about your qualifications and areas of interest. For example, do not pretend to have received training that you have not. In short, be honest throughout the process.
- When expressing yourself, try to be confident and calm. This creates a positive impression on the other party that you have strong communication skills.
- Do not hesitate to ask questions about the organisation and position you are applying for. However, these questions should be about salary, benefits, holidays, etc.
- Finally, at the end of the interview, thank them for the opportunity they have given you.
